Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is pushing for a formal investigation after a shooting erupted at the state border. Several residents in the Dhemaji district suffered injuries during the attack at Mingmang Badati. Sarma wants the culprits identified and punished immediately. He plans to urge his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart, Pema Khandu, to launch a probe into the violence.
The flare-up occurred within one of 52 remaining disputed villages. Assam and Arunachal Pradesh previously identified 123 contentious areas, but they have already cleared 71 of them. Sarma noted that only five sectors still face significant boundary disagreements. "Yesterday's incident was painful," Sarma said. "Primarily, we have already settled our boundary disputes in almost all sectors. Only in five sectors are some disputes still there."
Tensions remain high as local groups launched an economic blockade targeting supply routes into Arunachal Pradesh. Sarma urged calm, noting that the Mising and Adi communities involved in the conflict share the same lineage. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and CM Khandu are already talking to find a path forward. Officials expect the blockade to end shortly. Sarma warned that this isolated violence must not derail the broader peace talks between the two states.
