Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Home and Border Affairs Minister Mama Natung called for calm on July 26. He addressed the ongoing interstate boundary dispute with Assam. The state remains dedicated to a resolution through talks rather than conflict. Natung referred to Assam as the elder brother and other Northeastern states as younger brothers. He emphasized that building harmony between neighbors is a priority.
Natung cited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his remarks. "We can change friends but not neighbours," he noted. He urged people along the Papum Pare-Assam border to keep the peace. The minister spoke during a high-level meeting with government officials and student leaders. This session reviewed security at the Tarasso border after recent friction broke out at Sango village.
Historical factors drive the complex legal disagreement. Natung mentioned the 1951 notification linked to Gopinath Bordoloi, the Chatterjee Committee report, and the Namsai Declaration. He thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for prioritizing these regional disputes. While the case is currently sub judice, both state governments continue bilateral discussions. "I urge the denizens to maintain brotherhood," he said.
Officials and student leaders agreed to avoid escalation. A formal joint meeting between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will happen soon. The state government requested that all stakeholders exercise restraint and uphold the current status quo until a settlement arrives.
