Guwahati: Assam has lost control of 82,751.86 hectares of its territory. Four neighboring states currently occupy the land. Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora confirmed these figures in the Assembly on July 29 after a query from Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi.
Nagaland holds the lion's share of the occupied territory at 59,490.21 hectares. Arunachal Pradesh sits on 16,144.01 hectares. Mizoram controls 3,675.78 hectares, while Meghalaya holds 3,441.86 hectares. These states have also lodged formal claims over much larger swaths of Assam soil. Nagaland claims 12,882.6 square kilometers. Meghalaya demands 2,732.14 square kilometers. Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh claim 927.74 and 858.91 square kilometers respectively.
Assam manages complex borders totaling over 2,400 kilometers. It shares 884.9 km with Meghalaya, 804.1 km with Arunachal Pradesh, 512.1 km with Nagaland, 164.6 km with Mizoram, and 46.3 km with Tripura. Officials are pushing for dialogue to end these disputes.
The government maintains that settlements must be mutually acceptable. Progress is happening on some fronts. Bora told the assembly, "We have already signed bilateral agreements with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh as per the instructions of the Union Home Ministry." Ongoing discussions aim to fix these boundary issues for good.
