Guwahati: The Airports Authority of India has started a preliminary survey on Majuli island to find space for a new airport. This move follows a February pledge by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to add four airports to the state network.
A six-person AAI team walked the ground. The group included Deputy General Managers Sanjay Kaur, Khushial Singh, and Parvinder Tiwari. Assistant General Manager Gaurav Kumar, Manager Rohan Maheshwar, and Assistant Manager Suresh Kumar rounded out the unit. They checked spots from Jengraimukh to Kamalabari Darbar Chapori. The team scrutinized land quality, local conditions, and transport links.
Majuli Deputy Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak joined the tour alongside police, forest, transport, and administration staff. "The preliminary survey as a positive development for Majuli," Pathak said. Officials did not pick a final spot yet. They will perform more tests before making a call. The project aims to link the river island to the rest of India and improve travel for residents.

Beyond basic transport, officials view the terminal as a potential engine for the island’s economy and tourism sector. The survey serves as an early technical and logistical vetting process. While the momentum is building, planners warn that significant administrative work and rigorous technical testing must clear the way before any ground is broken for construction.
