Guwahati: RSS worker Hiteswar Chakravorty started a 335-hour hunger strike in Guwahati on Sunday, August 16. He began the protest at 11 am opposite the Assam Secretariat in Dispur. The strike will last until 10 am on August 30. He is challenging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over comments made on July 10. Sarma called ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah a revolutionary and suggested honoring him with a mural.
Chakravorty demands a full apology and the resignation of the Chief Minister. He also wants authorities to arrest Baruah under the National Security Act. The protest dates align with the deaths of two RSS members allegedly killed by ULFA militants. Pramod Narayan Dixit died on August 16, 1991, and Sukleswar Medhi was killed on August 30, 2005.
The protester claims the Chief Minister betrayed the Sangh ideology by praising a man who threatens Indian sovereignty. He reached out to the Union Home Ministry, the President of India, and the Governor of Assam for action. He has faced silence from those offices so far. The President's office asked for a petition, but his attempt to send it via email failed.
Chakravorty also scolded political parties for their lack of backbone regarding these comments. He believes recent floods distracted the public from the controversy. He urged fellow RSS members to hold their leadership accountable for the silence. Regarding his public opposition, he stated, "I am very hurt by this statement from the Chief Minister."
