Guwahati: RSS worker Hiteswar Chakravorty is heading to Dispur this Sunday. He plans a 335-hour hunger strike directly opposite the Assam Secretariat. The protest kicks off at 11 am on August 16 and wraps up at 10 am on August 30. He is furious with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sarma publicly labeled ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah a revolutionary on July 10. The Chief Minister also suggested someone should paint a mural of the insurgent leader. Chakravorty wants a public apology. If Sarma refuses to back down, the protester demands his immediate resignation from office.
The dates for this hunger strike are intentional. They mark the anniversaries of two RSS leaders killed by ULFA militants. Pramod Narayan Dixit died on August 16, 1991, in Barpeta Road. Sukleswar Medhi, a teacher, was gunned down in Nalbari on August 30, 2005. Chakravorty pointed to the hypocrisy of the Chief Minister, who often promotes Hindutva values.
"It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister, who talks about Hindutva and the RSS, can appeal to draw a mural of ULFA chief Paresh Baruah," Chakravorty stated. He now demands the arrest of Baruah under the National Security Act. Chakravorty also questioned why the Chief Minister faces no consequences. He noted that a young woman was previously arrested simply for writing poems in support of the banned group.
