Guwahati: Hiteswar Chakraborty stopped his 335-hour hunger strike on Sunday morning. The RSS swayamsevak sat for 14 days in Guwahati. He began the protest on August 16 to demand the arrest of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Chakraborty cited the Chief Minister's comments regarding ULFA (I) leader Paresh Baruah as grounds for sedition charges. He wanted Sarma to quit or apologize.
The protest occurred under the watch of former BJP leader Jayanta Kumar Das and Sujata Gurung Chowdhury. Chakraborty demanded the Chief Minister face the National Security Act and asked officials to lift the ban on the United Liberation Front of Asom. He previously contacted the President, the Governor of Assam, and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. No one replied.
Chakraborty plans to take the case to court. He faced no major health issues, though he claimed the state failed to send medical staff to the site. Das hammered the RSS leadership for their lack of support throughout the ordeal. He asked, "whether its leadership was seeking to appease Sarma at the cost of its stated principles."
Das also alleged that some RSS officials trade support for personal gain. He criticized the local media for ignoring the two-week protest. The silence from top brass now casts doubt on the organization's current priorities in Assam.
