Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is gunning for the Divisional Forest Officer in Hojai. He claims at least two or three illegal stone quarries are running wide open in the district. Sarma thinks it is impossible for those operations to exist without the officer in charge having a front-row seat to the crime.

Sarma did not mince words when questioning the DFO's lack of action or awareness. "If the chief minister knows about it, why does the DFO not know?" he asked. The Chief Minister made it clear that if the investigation confirms these operations, the officer needs to be suspended immediately.

The state government is pushing a hard line against illegal mining across the region. Officials now need to prove the allegations before they can pull the trigger on a suspension. The Chief Minister remains convinced the work is happening only because the DFO is looking the other way.
