Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded a leaner, modernized police force on August 17. He wants a system that prioritizes crime prevention and results. Sarma sat down with Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and top Home Department officials to dissect the state’s law and order machine.
The meeting tackled a massive agenda. Officials reviewed the status of child marriage and polygamy cases. They discussed Dial 112 operations, battalion projects, and police housing. They also talked about how to reform Home Guards and Village Defence Parties while redrawing police station borders. The goal is simple. Get the job done. Sarma stressed the need for thorough investigations that reach their logical conclusion, stating, "ensure that cases reach their logical conclusion with the timely conviction of offenders."
This push for efficiency follows a disappointing performance record. On July 6, the state government revealed to the Assembly that police filed chargesheets in only 54 per cent of the nearly 10 lakh cases logged since 2016. That was the year the BJP first took power.
Separately, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota met with Major General Inderjit Singh Bhinder of the Assam Rifles on Monday. They discussed border management and security coordination. Kota praised the Assam Rifles for keeping the peace and working closely with local communities throughout the Northeast.
