Guwahati: Locals ignored high-alert warnings and flooded the banks of the Gangadhar River in the Golakganj area of Assam's Dhubri district on the morning of October 31. They went fishing. Despite a government directive to steer clear of swollen water bodies, scores of residents waded into the fast-moving current.
The river surged after a glacial lake outburst flood occurred in Bhutan. Disaster management teams continue to watch embankments and low-lying zones across downstream districts. Eyewitnesses reported the water brought a massive haul of fish into the area. It also carried heavy wooden logs and assorted debris from upper catchment zones.
Residents spent the morning pulling timber from the riverbanks while others hunted for fish in the dangerous current. Authorities worry that the public is ignoring life-threatening risks. The sight of people in the water remains a major concern as officials state, "entering swollen and fast-flowing rivers during such conditions can pose serious risks."
