Guwahati: The Beki River is swelling in Bajali. Bhutan’s Kurichhu Hydroelectric Project dumped excess water into the system, forcing local authorities to sound the alarm for anyone living near the banks. The water levels began their climb at approximately 5 a.m. today.
Residents are on edge. Memories of the ruinous floods from 2004 and 2007 remain fresh for the people living in low-lying areas. The district administration is watching the river closely as the current strengthens.
Officials used loudspeakers to warn the public. They want people away from the water. Authorities specifically cautioned locals to stop trying to fish or gather firewood, stating that "people should stay away from the river and move to safer locations if necessary." Safe zones are the only priority until the surge passes.
