Guwahati: Assam’s famous Kohinoor Theatre is likely closing its doors. Tapan Lahkar, the current director, hinted at the end of the mobile troupe in a recent social media post. He wrote, "Bahut kothai ase... But No More Kohinoor Theatre," leaving fans and followers guessing about the group’s future. No official reasons for the potential shutdown were provided.

Ratan Lahkar founded the company in 1976. Based out of Pathsala in the Bajali region, the group spent five decades defining the state’s Bhramyamaan mobile theatre tradition. They specialized in large-scale productions, intricate stage designs, and technical stunts that drew massive crowds. Tapan Lahkar assumed control after his father died in 2017.

The group gained fame for bold adaptations of global blockbusters. They brought Titanic and Jurassic Park to life on portable stages. Their impact even stretched beyond local borders. The National School of Drama invited the group to perform in New Delhi in 2010. Whether this marks a permanent exit or a shift in operations remains unclear. The curtains might fall for good.
