Guwahati: Bijan Bayan and Samudra Patgiri resigned as secretaries of the Bajali District Suraksha Samiti in Pathsala. The pair cited the organization's failure to fix the district's boundary and administrative identity. They voiced these grievances at a local press conference.
The leaders hit back at the recent transfer of 50 villages from Patacharkuchi police station to Howly and Barpeta Road. They claimed this move shrinks the police district to match only the Bajali Assembly constituency. The men alleged that political influence has crippled the group, specifically questioning the role of Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker and former Patacharkuchi MLA Ranjit Kumar Das.
The public formed the Samiti at Pathsala Harimandir after former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal promised to upgrade the Bajali subdivision. Assam declared the region its 34th district in 2021. Since then, the state has withdrawn and restored that status multiple times. On October 12, 2023, the government reinstated the district but with a reduced footprint.
A cabinet committee currently exists to solve the boundary feud between Bajali and Barpeta, but progress is stalled. Bayan and Patgiri noted that disjointed boundaries now exist for police, education, and electoral jurisdictions. Government files remain split between two districts. Bayan and Patgiri stated: "Repeated efforts by the committee had failed to secure a clearly defined boundary or a stable administrative identity for Bajali."
