Assam Woman Challenges Police Version of Husband's Fatal Encounter

Guwahati: Jonmoni Gogoi is fighting back. Her husband, Ghanakanta Gogoi, died in a police encounter in Naharkatia, Assam. She spoke to the media on November 5 and challenged the official narrative. She claims the police killed him while he was already in their custody. She insists he had surrendered and was not trying to escape.

Gogoi demanded transparency regarding the killing. She pointed to the existence of CCTV footage that could verify the actual sequence of events on the ground. Instead of a lawful investigation, she says, officers chose lethal force. She claims they denied him any chance to explain himself.

"My husband was not running away. He had surrendered before the police. The police did not give him an opportunity to speak," she stated. The widow also questioned why officers ignored established protocols governing police encounters. Her claims have triggered a demand for accountability from the family. They want investigators to review all evidence, though the police account of the incident remains currently unverified.
