Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi is pressuring the federal government to track down Mumtaz Begum, an Assam woman sent across the border to Bangladesh. The deportation occurred during the night of June 13 and 14, 2026. Her family claims authorities moved her without any notice. She remains missing.

Gogoi wrote to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on October 2. He wants immediate help finding Begum and bringing her home. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously claimed the woman was safe and talking to her son. The son, Momruz Ali, disputes this story entirely. He says he has had no contact with his mother and no official updates from the state. Gogoi challenged the Chief Minister directly on the discrepancy. "If the CM knows she is safe, then where is she?" Gogoi asked.

The Gauhati High Court has already slammed the Foreigners Tribunal and state officials for their handling of this case. Judges ordered the Ministry of External Affairs to find the woman in Bangladesh and clear the path for her return. Bangladesh authorities have reportedly started their own search. Gogoi says the family deserves answers. He insists the state must find her on either side of the border. "No family should be left without knowing where their loved one is," he added.
