Bangladesh Launches Manhunt for Assam Woman Deported in Error

Guwahati: Bangladesh authorities are hunting for Mamtaj Begum. She disappeared after being deported from India this June. Officials have plastered her photograph across Dhaka and Sylhet. They still cannot find her.

Begum hails from Nagaon, Assam. A local Foreigners Tribunal labeled her an illegal immigrant on June 6, 2019. The Gauhati High Court overturned that ruling on April 20, 2026. Despite the court victory, police arrested her outside the courthouse on May 30. They hauled her to the Sribhumi detention center.

She crossed the border into Bangladesh on June 14. Her husband fought back. He filed a writ petition demanding her return. The Gauhati High Court agreed. The court formally ordered the government to secure her passage home, stating that "Begum be brought back from Bangladesh." The search continues.
