Shillong: Titosstarwell Chyne, the Leader of the Opposition in the KHADC, wants a major push to fix Meghalaya government colleges. He flagged deep infrastructure gaps and faculty shortages as primary hurdles for local students. Chyne spoke at the 13th General Conference of the Meghalaya Government College Teachers’ Association (MGCTA) Sohra Unit. The event took place at Sohra Government College in Saitsophen on Thursday.
The institution holds massive potential for excellence in tourism, environmental studies, and Khasi culture. Chyne promised to lobby the government for better academic facilities to support this growth. "Sohra is known to the world for its rain, its caves and its beauty. But Sohra should also be known for its education," Chyne stated. He serves as the local MDC for Sohra and seeks to lift the academic profile of the region.
Teachers carry a heavy load. They handle first-generation learners and children from struggling families. Chyne noted that instructors must act as mentors and guides while students face social media distractions, drug use, and anxiety over jobs. He urged the staff to teach values like hard work and respect for the Jaitbynriew.
The state needs a wider debate on applying the National Education Policy 2020. Students require global skills without losing their cultural roots. Chyne praised the MGCTA for advocating for teacher rights and student welfare. MGCTA Sohra Unit president Catherine Syngai and Principal A. Mawa were present for the session.
