Guwahati: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways officially designated a new national highway to link Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The route, now named National Highway-515A, begins at its junction with NH-515 near Akajan. It winds through Likabali, Siji, Garu, Dali, and Basar. The road ends at a junction with NH-13 near Bam in Arunachal Pradesh. This upgrade follows years of persistent neglect.
For years, the Likabali-Garu stretch has frustrated commuters, local traders, and security personnel. The road features deep potholes and frequent landslide blockades. The monsoon season regularly cuts off essential supplies to administrative towns across the state. Officials hope the new status forces long-overdue repairs on the battered network.
The Galo Youth Organisation welcomed the news. It fulfills a long-standing demand from the Galo community. GYO president Bomkar Gara said the organization had been pursuing the demand for several years and termed the notification a significant achievement. Gara expects the highway to spark regional development and create new opportunities for the Galo-Gumin community.
