Guwahati: The Union Cabinet greenlit a massive road project on August 6. It targets a 135.871-km stretch between Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. The four-lane, access-controlled corridor on National Highway-15 will cost 8,970.20 crore rupees. Officials confirm the work will run under a build-operate-transfer toll model.
The project includes a 4.9-km emergency landing facility on the Tezpur bypass. This was planned alongside the Indian Air Force. "The corridor is expected to double average travel speeds and cut travel time by half," the government stated. These improvements should fix congestion on the existing NH-27, which sits on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra.
Construction plans call for five major bypasses at Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli, and Tezpur. The highway will host 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, and 46 underpasses. Crews will also install an elephant underpass on the Tezpur bypass.
The upgraded route links Assam to Arunachal Pradesh. It ties together eight PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, including industrial parks and the aspirational districts of Darrang and Udalguri. Travelers gain better access to the Maa Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and Orang National Park. The design also supports seven logistics hubs, connecting three railway stations, two airports, and two inland waterway terminals.
