Guwahati: The Union Cabinet greenlit an 8,970.20 crore project to build a 135.871-km four-lane highway connecting Guwahati and Tezpur. Work happens on National Highway-15 under a build-operate-transfer toll model. The job moves fast.
Planners included a 4.9-km emergency landing strip on the Tezpur bypass. The Indian Air Force consulted on the design. This strip aims to clear up heavy traffic on the existing NH-27 East-West Corridor that hugs the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River.
Crews will construct five bypasses to kill bottlenecks at Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli, and Tezpur. The project site is packed with engineering requirements. Specs include 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, 46 underpasses, and one elephant underpass at the Tezpur bypass.
Officials claim the highway will double average speeds. Travel time drops by half. Expect better fuel efficiency and lower operating costs for vehicles moving through Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The route links critical hubs across the region. It serves eight PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, including industrial parks and the aspirational districts of Darrang and Udalguri. Travelers gain easier access to Maa Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and Orang National Park. Seven logistics hubs sit along the path. These consist of three railway stations, two airports, and two inland waterway terminals.
The government stated the project is expected to "facilitate quicker movement of goods and passengers across the region." Growth remains the goal.
