Guwahati: Construction on the Silchar to Saurashtra East-West Corridor stopped cold on August 31. Angry residents and landowners in Dima Hasao, Assam, shut down work at the Dolaichunga section near Harangajao Police Station. They demand payment for land seized for the project. Promises from authorities went nowhere.
The standoff hits a 25-km stretch between Jatinga and the Shiv Temple. Workers had nearly finished two lanes of the Dolaichunga flyover. Those lanes were scheduled to open by September 5. The protest stalled that progress completely. Two other lanes remain open to traffic for now.
Villagers claim the construction firm wrecked their primary access route. They want the company to fix the damage to their lifeline. The group also insists on the construction of a pedestrian footpath on the Dolaichunga Bridge for public safety. Locals described the path as necessary for the "safe movement of pedestrians and local residents."
The suspension fuels fears of long-term project delays. Officials now face mounting pressure to settle the compensation claims and address infrastructure grievances. Resuming the project depends on finding a fix for these disputes soon.
