Kohima: The Election Commission of India hosted its first All India Media Conference 2026 in New Delhi this Friday. Over 380 media professionals from various states and union territories attended the gathering. The event focused on the theme of connecting stakeholders and strengthening democracy. Nagaland sent a delegation of print and digital journalists alongside representatives from the state Chief Electoral Officer office.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar spoke to the crowd. He insisted that the country holds elections strictly under the Constitution and specific electoral laws. The CEC noted that the electoral process undergoes a concurrent audit by all involved stakeholders. He stated that over 12 lakh Booth Level Officers and 15 lakh Booth Level Agents serve as "concurrent auditors" to protect electoral rolls.
Kumar credited high voter turnout in recent assembly elections to the public trust in the system. The conference provided a deep look at transparency measures. Experts reviewed the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951, the ECINET platform, and relevant media laws. Attendees also learned about the specific duties of polling and counting agents.
Organizers walked the participants through hands-on demonstrations. These included the steps for preparing electoral rolls and the mechanics of the polling and counting processes. The event wrapped up with a direct question and answer session between the media team and the CEC.
