Kohima: Three Nagaland State Transport bus crashes since 2023 left two people dead and 46 injured. Health and Family Welfare Minister P. Paiwang Konyak confirmed the statistics during the Nagaland Legislative Assembly session on September 3. Families of the dead received ex-gratia payments. All injured passengers got financial aid.
Mechanical failure caused two of the three accidents. Authorities are still probing the July 9, 2026, crash. An inquiry committee holds the file. The driver in that incident is suspended. Officials await final findings.
The transport department launched new safety rules to stop the carnage. Breathalyzer tests now screen for alcohol and drug use. Mechanics must perform routine fitness inspections on the entire fleet. Enforcement teams are targeting rash driving and overloading. Controlling officers track the daily conduct of all drivers and conductors.
Minister Konyak explained the state's plan to prevent future tragedies. He said, "The department has mandated routine fitness and roadworthiness inspections of the fleet by mechanics, alongside intensified vigilance by enforcement teams to curb rash driving and passenger overloading."
