Nagaland Olympic Association Pushes for 5% Sports Quota in Government Jobs

Kohima: The Nagaland Olympic Association wants the state government to reserve 5% of vacancies for top-tier athletes. Secretary General Abu Metha sent the formal request to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on October 12. The group wants this policy applied immediately to Nagaland Police openings and all hiring via the Nagaland Staff Selection Board.

Athletes need support. The proposal outlines a clear path for success, including extra marks for sporting wins and direct job appointments for international medalists. The association also requested out-of-turn promotions and welfare perks like medical coverage for injured competitors. Para-athletes must be included in the final rules, the NOA stated.

Metha argued that the policy is a long-term investment. "The NOA described sports quota recruitment as an investment in Nagaland’s future rather than merely an employment initiative." Officials want to open career doors for kids from remote or poor backgrounds.

A committee should handle the details. The NOA recommended a team from the Home Department, Police Headquarters, the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, and the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department to draft the framework. This team would study other states and the central government to build a plan that works for Nagaland.

The plan demands honesty. The association insists on strict verification of sporting credentials to block fake certificates. By rewarding discipline and training, the NOA believes the state can help India win on the world stage. They want the government to act now to ensure athletes can apply for the next round of hiring.
