Nagaland Launches Intensive Electoral Roll Revision Drive

Kohima: The Election Commission of India has ordered a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across Nagaland. Chief Electoral Officer Bhagyashree Banayat confirmed the qualifying date for this exercise is October 1, 2026. The goal is simple. Clean the rolls of ineligible entries and ensure every qualified citizen is included.

Officials began the preparatory phase on August 5. This runs until August 14. During this time, authorities are training Booth Level Officers, setting up help desks, and meeting with political stakeholders. Dimapur District Election Officer Dr. Tinojongshi Chang urged residents to help. He stated, "I appeal to all citizens to extend full cooperation to Booth Level Officers during the ongoing SIR of the Photo Electoral Rolls, 2026 to ensure an accurate, complete and updated electoral roll."

From August 16 to September 14, officers will conduct house-to-house verifications. Voters must keep passport-size photographs ready for this process. Booth Level Officers will distribute and collect pre-filled enumeration forms during these visits. They will leave a duplicate copy with the applicant as a receipt. Officials will also cap each polling station at 1,200 electors unless they receive special approval to exceed that limit.

The state will publish the draft electoral roll on September 20. Anyone left off the draft list can file a claim using Form 6 between September 20 and October 20. EROs and AEROs will handle objections and conduct enquiries through November 18. This includes referring suspected foreign nationals to authorities under the Citizenship Act, 1955. The final, verified electoral roll goes live on November 22, 2026. Citizens needing help can call the toll-free helpline 1950 or use the ECINET platform.
