Kohima: The Election Commission of India hosted its first All India Media Conference 2026 in New Delhi on July 17. Over 350 media professionals gathered at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management in Dwarka. A delegation of nine journalists from Nagaland attended alongside officials from the state Chief Electoral Officer's office.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar opened the event. He described the conference as a “much awaited initiative” for those covering the democratic process. Kumar insisted that Indian elections follow strict constitutional rules. He noted that over 27 lakh Booth Level Officers and Booth Level Agents work to audit the rolls. These individuals act as concurrent auditors for the system.
The program featured several expert briefings. DG of Media Ashish Goyal spoke on strengthening democracy. Dr. Seema Khanna, the DG of IT, showcased the ECINet platform. DDG of Law Vijay Kumar Pandey explained recent legal judgments. Sessions covered the role of polling and counting agents in maintaining transparency.
Participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations. They reviewed electoral roll preparation and actual polling procedures. Attendees examined statutory forms used during the audit process. The event concluded with a direct question and answer session with the commissioner. Kumar highlighted that 40 countries now visit India to study its electoral practices.
