Kohima: The Election Commission of India has ordered a Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll in Nagaland. CEO Bhagyashree Banayat announced the October 1, 2026, qualifying date for the massive cleanup. Local officials want an error-free list. Every eligible citizen must be included while ineligible people are cleared out.
Preparations start August 5 and run through August 14. This phase involves training Booth Level Officers, printing forms, and meeting with political parties. Help desks will open to assist the public. The real work begins shortly after.
Booth Level Officers start house-to-house visits on August 16. They will hand out enumeration forms with pre-printed details of existing electors. Residents must return these forms to the officers by September 14. BLOs will issue an acknowledgment receipt for every collected document. EROs will also rationalize polling stations during this window to ensure no location exceeds 1,200 electors without commission approval.
The draft roll hits the public on September 20. Only those who returned their forms or verified online will make the cut. Anyone missed can still file Form 6 during the claims and objections period, which stays open from September 20 to October 20. Officials will review these submissions through November 18. They will use the Representation of the People Act, 1950, to confirm eligibility. Suspected foreign nationals will face scrutiny under the Citizenship Act, 1955. EROs have the power to launch a suo motu enquiry if details remain unclear.
The CEO’s office is pushing for maximum involvement to get the job done right. Describing the process as a "participative exercise," the office appealed to all stakeholders, including political parties and election officials, to extend cooperation and support. The final electoral roll for Nagaland is set for publication on November 22.
