Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wants to bring 17th-century hero Lachit Borphukan to the big screen. The state government is currently talking with director Aditya Dhar about a big-budget biopic. Dhar is known for his work on Uri: The Surgical Strike and the upcoming film Dhurandhar.
Sarma shared the news during a Facebook Live session on Thursday, July 16. He plans to meet with Dhar in August to iron out the details. The goal is to highlight the commander who led Ahom forces to victory against the Mughals at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671.
The government aims for a Bollywood-scale production to showcase the history of the military leader to a worldwide audience. If the project happens, it will be the first time the state backs such a major film about Borphukan. The chief minister remains focused on the final product.
"If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made," Sarma said. The administration is keeping its options open to ensure the story gets told properly.
