Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Thursday, July 16, that his administration is scouting for a high-profile filmmaker to bring the life of legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan to the big screen. The state is currently in talks with Aditya Dhar to helm the project. Dhar is best known for the National Award-winning film Uri: The Surgical Strike and his upcoming production, Dhurandhar.
Sarma spoke during a Facebook Live session regarding the plan. He intends to meet with the director in August for deep-dive discussions. The goal is a big-budget, Bollywood-scale production to showcase the history of the 17th-century commander to global audiences. Borphukan famously led the Ahom forces to victory over the Mughals in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat. It remains a defining moment for the region.
The administration wants a grand cinematic take. If this specific partnership fails, the state will find someone else. Sarma noted, "If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made."
This push fits into the state’s 2026-27 budget plans. The government intends to back films highlighting local icons, including Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar. This would be the first time the Assam government backs a project of this scale focused on the Ahom general. It aims to put his military career on the national map.
