NIT Silchar hunger strike turns critical as authorities allegedly block medical aid

Guwahati: NIT Workers Union members are collapsing at the Silchar campus. The group started an indefinite hunger strike on August 27 to demand job regularisation. Their health is failing rapidly. Protesters claim that NIT authorities stopped medical staff from giving them saline drips to combat the effects of their prolonged fast.

The situation turned volatile once the alleged interference started. District Commissioner officials sent a medical team to the site to examine the workers. Despite the presence of doctors, the union alleges that the administration actively blocked life-saving care. Tensions spiked on the grounds as the protesters watched their colleagues suffer. Some were eventually sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for emergency care.

The union remains furious over the interference. The workers stated, "The protesting workers said that prolonged fasting had severely affected the health of several participants." NIT authorities have not yet issued a response to the allegations of medical obstruction. Officials are watching the situation closely as the workers continue their standoff.
