Guwahati: More than 160 prominent citizens from Assam are begging activist Sonam Wangchuk to quit his hunger strike. The group includes writers, former bureaucrats, and police officers. They fear for his life. Wangchuk hit his 20th day of fasting at Jantar Mantar on Thursday. His health is failing fast.
The activist wants Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to quit. He blames the minister for frequent question paper leaks. The signatories praise Wangchuk as a champion for the Ladakhi people. They slammed the central government for ignoring his long protest. The group stated, "The Government of India should have responded to his peaceful protest much earlier. However, expecting compassion or civility from a dispensation that appears wooden-hearted and power-driven is like crying in the wilderness."
Supporters claim the fast has already exposed the cold nature of the current leaders. They argue that if the government ignores a man of his status, they likely treat ordinary dissenters even worse. Signatories include Hiren Gohain, former DGP Harekrishna Deka, and former Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil. Former MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, editor Paresh Malakar, and journalist Nitumoni Saikia also signed the appeal. The group believes Wangchuk has made his point and must now preserve his life.
