Guwahati: Activists blocked part of National Highway 315 in Margherita on July 19 to back scientist Sonam Wangchuk. They gathered at Borgolai to condemn his forced removal from a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The All India Kisan Sabha Tinsukia District Council and the All India Youth Federation Tinsukia District Committee led the charge. Members of the All India Students Federation joined them. Protesters called the removal of Wangchuk cowardly and undemocratic.
Wangchuk is holding his strike to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. AIKS Assam State Secretary Sanjeev Gangooly slammed the Central and State Governments for using fear to silence citizens. He claimed the government is trying to suppress dissent instead of respecting the right to protest.
The demonstration remained peaceful as attendees shouted slogans for democratic rights. Gangooly asked political groups of all stripes to join a bigger protest in Delhi on July 20.
