Guwahati: Protesters flooded Chachal in Guwahati on Thursday, calling for the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The Cockroach Janta Party organized the event, claiming over 10,000 people from across the Northeast attended. Demonstrators marched to show solidarity with activist Sonam Wangchuk and students targeted by police during the recent Chalo Sansad march in New Delhi.
The crowd demanded accountability for recurring exam paper leaks. They held placards and chanted against the BJP-led government. Wangchuk remains on a hunger strike after police forcibly removed him from Jantar Mantar and moved him to a hospital last Saturday. Thousands of protesters still gather at the New Delhi site, bolstered by support from various Opposition parties.
Meanwhile, students in Doomdooma staged a separate, spontaneous rally near the Mahatma Gandhi statue. They demanded a transparent and fair testing system. These students claimed no political affiliation for their gathering. Police briefly confronted the group for lacking assembly permits, triggering a tense standoff. One participant retorted, "Peaceful protest is our constitutional right. It is unfortunate that students are questioned for raising democratic demands while seeking justice for their future."
The Doomdooma group insisted their campaign will continue until the government guarantees a system free from manipulation and administrative failure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the mounting pressure on X. He stated, "Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth." The Prime Minister committed to launching fast-track courts specifically for handling paper leak cases to ensure harsh penalties for the guilty.
