Guwahati: Protests erupted across Assam on Thursday as students demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Demonstrators in Doomdooma, Juria, Kokrajhar, and Guwahati targeted the BJP-led Central government over the NEET question paper leak. They want a transparent examination system.
In Doomdooma, students gathered near a Mahatma Gandhi statue. They claim repeated irregularities destroyed public trust. "The repeated irregularities in competitive examinations have shattered the trust of students. We demand the resignation of the Union Education Minister and a transparent, fair and accountable examination system," the protesters stated. Police briefly blocked the gathering, citing a lack of permits. The students argued they had requested permission to no avail.
Members of the All Assam Minority Students Union held separate rallies. Supporters in Juria marched in the main market to back the Cockroach Janta Party. Meanwhile, Kokrajhar protesters wore black badges. They condemned the Delhi Police for alleged assaults on students protesting at Jantar Mantar. They called the police response an attack on democratic rights.
The Guwahati protest at Chachal drew notable attention. Dibisa Mahanta, daughter of Assam Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta, joined the demonstration. Footage showed her carrying placards and chanting slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The rally included activists, youths, and civil society members from across the Northeast. They expressed support for Sonam Wangchuk, who finished a 26-day hunger strike that same day. Prime Minister Modi recently promised a new law to establish fast-track courts for paper leak cases.
