Guwahati: Students across Assam took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Demonstrators in Tinsukia gathered at Thana Charali, while students in Goalpara held parallel events. They demand the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protesters blame the government for systemic negligence.
The atmosphere was tense. Students held placards and shouted slogans, claiming that repeated exam scandals have shattered their faith in the system. They explicitly linked the turmoil to the tragic death of Rima Begum, a student from Krishnai who died by suicide on June 8. Protesters argue that such deaths are not simple suicides but the direct result of administrative failure.
One student addressed the crowd in Tinsukia. "The assault on students at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi is a matter of shame for Indian democracy. We still have a chance to wake up; we have to change this government," they said. Participants also voiced frustration over how the state treats dissenters. "We are labelled as anti-nationals when we ask questions. We want the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan," another protester added.
The demonstrations in Goalpara faced hurdles. The district administration halted the protest, citing a lack of prior permission. Students claimed they followed legal channels but suffered from administrative delays. Meanwhile, in Tinsukia, the protest remained peaceful. Multiple organizations joined the students to call for a full investigation and compensation for affected families. They remain committed to transparency and reform in all national examinations.
