Shillong: Meghalaya BJP leaders rejected claims that weeks of student protests forced Dharmendra Pradhan to quit as Union Education Minister. Party spokesperson Arnab Das insisted the exit was a strategic move on Sunday. He argued the change aims to stop anti-national forces from exploiting national exam scandals.
The resignation came Saturday after 36 days of intense pressure. Students at NEHU and other schools joined a national movement sparked by NEET and NET paper leaks. Demonstrators across the country, including those at Jantar Mantar, celebrated the departure as a win for their cause.
"Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned on his own and not under any pressure. The aim was to prevent anti-national and outside forces from taking advantage of the situation," Das stated. The party official pivoted to defend the Centre by citing new university projects and future plans for transparent entrance exams.
The BJP also pointed fingers at other regions. Das highlighted recent exam leaks in Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed leaders in those non-BJP states ignored calls for moral accountability. Despite the official party line, local Meghalaya students still demand answers. The party says it will keep talking with the community to ensure a better future for the youth.
