Shillong: Meghalaya BJP leadership is distancing itself from a controversial social media post allegedly authored by Yuva Morcha president Mewaker Lyngdoh Pakma. The post, which appeared on Pakma's official Facebook and Instagram accounts, reportedly demanded police shoot protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, adding that tear gas was not enough. Party spokesperson Arnab Das claimed the account was hacked and misused. He stated, "We have sought clarification from our Yuva Morcha President and he has categorically denied making any such statements."
The defense failed to quell intense public outrage. Opponents and civil society groups are accusing the BJP of shielding its official rather than holding him accountable. The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, along with the youth wings of the VPP, HSPDP, UDP, and the HYC Education Cell, have condemned the remarks as a dangerous incitement to violence. UDP chief organiser Augester Jyrwa demanded a public apology, stating, "Public representatives must exercise restraint and responsibility in both their words and actions."
The BJP maintains that any social media content requires independent verification. The party condemned violence against police personnel and warned against political parties attempting to hijack student demonstrations. They also criticized the Congress for allegedly trying to enter the Prime Minister's official residence, labeling the move a security risk. Regarding the ongoing NEET paper leak controversy, the BJP confirmed 13 arrests have been made. They pledged that the central government is working on long-term examination reforms. Meanwhile, the political firestorm over the alleged social media threats continues to escalate across the state.
