Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar was cremated with full state honours on Wednesday in his ancestral town of Baraut, Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. His son, Abhishek, lit the pyre near Bawli Chungi on the Delhi-Saharanpur highway as a ceremonial guard of honour sounded. The 60-year-old IPS officer was found hanging in the washroom of his chamber at the Tripura Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. He was discovered by staff who broke open the door after he failed to return from the washroom.
Police registered a case of unnatural death. Investigators have seized the DGP's mobile phone, laptop, and personal computer for analysis at the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Narsingarh. Officials expect the forensic review to take roughly one and a half months. Investigating officer Subhrajit Deb confirmed the probe will look into circumstances leading to the incident. A complaint from Assistant Inspector General of Police Prabir Majumder noted that Dhankar had ordered staff to block all visitors until 11 am on the day of his death.
Dr. Pradip Bhowmik of GB Hospital stated that the officer was brought in critical condition on Monday. Doctors performed CPR for 48 minutes before declaring him dead at 12:48 pm. "The DGP was practically brought dead to the hospital. Even so, as per protocol, CPR and all necessary emergency treatment were given for a long time before he was declared dead," Dr. Bhowmik said. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha confirmed that a preliminary postmortem established death by hanging.
A 1994-batch officer, Dhankar had served with the CBI, CISF, and the United Nations mission in Kosovo. He previously led the investigation into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud. Acting DGP G.S. Rao announced that an inquiry committee will be formed to investigate the death. Despite the official investigation, political leaders have called for greater scrutiny. CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury demanded a judicial inquiry led by a sitting High Court judge, citing concerns over the impartiality of standard police probes. Advocate Somik Deb also urged the judiciary to take suo motu cognisance of the matter.
UP Minister Asim Arun, a 1994-batch colleague, attended the funeral alongside hundreds of mourners. The Tripura government declared a day of state mourning, with the national flag at half-mast. The state police sent representatives to accompany the body, while a special team assisted Dhankar's wife.
