NSCN-R Militant Surrenders to Security Forces in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: A high-ranking militant from the banned NSCN-R group turned himself in on July 17. Penngam Konyak, a 42-year-old self-styled Lieutenant Colonel, surrendered in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap district. He walked into the Khonsa office of the Superintendent of Police to drop his weapon.

Konyak handed over a pistol and live cartridges to a joint team of Assam Rifles, Central Reserve Police Force, and Arunachal Pradesh Police. He hails from Nyasa village in the Mon district of Nagaland. The surrender followed months of aggressive operational pressure and psychological campaigns aimed at breaking insurgent ranks.

Security forces have ramped up efforts to clear the border region of militant activity. Officials view this as a path to peace. A senior police officer noted, "This surrender reinforces the collective commitment of the administration and security agencies towards wiping out insurgency, restoring societal harmony, and creating an environment conducive to economic development in the region."

The district remains a hotbed for insurgent activity. Authorities hope this shift encourages other fighters to rejoin the mainstream. The state continues to push for stability in these border areas.
