Itanagar: Four members of the banned ULFA-I militant group gave themselves up to the 44 Assam Rifles and Longding Police on Friday. The surrender happened at Wakka in the Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh. Officials timed the operation just before Independence Day celebrations.

The men who turned themselves in are 33-year-old SS LC Ajay Asom, 31-year-old SS LC Biplob Asom, 28-year-old SS LC Monei Asom, and 22-year-old SS Pvt Bolin Asom. Their fathers are Bhadra Kanta Borah, Jonmaijoy Das, Lalit Borah, and Biman Borah, respectively. Troops seized four pistols and 17 live rounds from the group.

Security forces view the surrender as a win for their counter-insurgency push. The goal remains bringing fighters back into the mainstream. An Assam Rifles official said, "It’s a huge success for us as we have been trying to bring back young misguided youths who joined insurgent groups. Recently, many youths have returned to the mainstream and are living a dignified life."

The authorities are currently investigating the matter. This follows a string of similar departures from the outfit as local teams work to clear the region of active insurgents.
