Imphal: Security forces across Manipur seized significant stockpiles of weapons and arrested insurgents in a coordinated crackdown. Police and military units dismantled militant networks from Bishnupur to Kangpokpi. The operation targeted hidden caches and active cadre members.
A joint team including the Manipur Police, 16 Assam Rifles, 28 Assam Rifles, and the 133 CRPF conducted a sweep near Makokchung Bridge and Tusam Village in Kangpokpi on August 2. Led by SDPO Lunthang Vaiphei under the supervision of SP Rahul Gupta, the team recovered an M-16 rifle, Mark III rifle, sniper rifle, .22 bolt-action gun, 25 single-barrel guns, seven pistols, and four Pompi guns. They also found 76 live rounds, 179 empty cases, a rifle magazine, 36 hand grenades, 20 detonators, and four Baofeng radio sets with a charger. Saikul Police Station took custody of the gear.
Forces also raided the floating biomass near Sendra Hill in Bishnupur on Tuesday. They destroyed a temporary militant camp during a three-hour sweep. The inventory included a .32 pistol, a single-barrel breech-loading gun, a .22 bolt-action rifle, a Jefferson rifle, nine carbines, two MP-5s, three Lathode guns, two Pompi guns, and six IED packets.
Additional weapons turned up near the Arong river bank at Ekok Pat lake in Thoubal. Recoveries there included two INSAS rifles, an MP-5, an SLR, two .303 rifles, eight magazines, a smoke bomb, and 379 live rounds of various calibers. Officials reported that the mission targeted specific intelligence leads. "A joint team of the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police recovered a large cache of arms, ammunition and explosives during coordinated anti-insurgency operations in Bishnupur, Kangpokpi and Thoubal districts," officials said.
Police arrested Arambam Bobo Singh, 42, a self-styled major of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Apunba), at his home in Wangoo Mameiching, Kakching district, on August 3. In other drug-related busts, authorities grabbed Jeevan Basnet, 38, in Kangpokpi following the seizure of 49.5 kg of opium. Md. Firoz Alam, 34, was arrested in Thoubal with 530.66 grams of suspected brown sugar, a 12-bore pump-action gun, eight shotgun shells, a cartridge belt, and Rs 1,81,280 in cash.
