Imphal: Security forces arrested four people in Imphal on Wednesday. They targeted insurgents and extortionists across Imphal East and Imphal West. District police commandos teamed up with the 33 Assam Rifles at Ghari Awang Leikai to find their first targets. They grabbed 29-year-old Yengkokpam Malemnganba Meitei. Police say he is an active member of the proscribed United National Liberation Front-Koireng faction, or UNLF-K. Authorities accuse Meitei of running extortion schemes.
The crackdown continued. Officers tracked down two more UNLF-K members, 22-year-old Salam Tomba Singh and 21-year-old Konsam Vivek Meitei. They also seized a white Mahindra Bolero used by the trio. Meanwhile, in Imphal East, police commandos worked with the 31 Assam Rifles to nab 28-year-old Yensembam Rajesh Meitei at Lamlong Bazar. Officials report he posed as a member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party-Miyamgi Fingang Lanmee to shake down a local shop.
A final push swept the Nongren Awang Leikai Chingmei area. A joint team from the Special Commando Unit and the 33 Assam Rifles combed the sector under the Lamlai Police Station. They recovered one Lathode gun, two pistols, one single-barrel gun, and two modified single-barrel guns. Officials said, "The arrests and recovery were part of ongoing security operations targeting insurgent and extortion-related activities in the two Imphal districts."
