Militant Group NRFM Claims Responsibility for Imphal East Execution

Imphal: The National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) claims it killed Waikhom Athoi, also known as Shidaba. Gunmen shot him dead at 12:03 am today near Kangla Sangomsang and Angom Leikai in Imphal East. Sanajaoba Meitei, the group's information secretary, confirmed the execution. The victim was the son of W. Shital and Pramodini from Khabam Mayai Leikai.

Athoi was once one of their own. He completed basic training with the Manipur Army and held ID number MA 220 as part of the 9th batch. The group alleges he deserted his post on January 19, 2026, and made off with a firearm. He then signed up with the Indian Army. After serving a four-month jail stint, he allegedly operated without approval.

The group claims they summoned him on August 19, but he stayed away. Leaders labeled his behavior as a betrayal of their interests. Citing these grievances, the NRFM stated, "the organisation had awarded him capital punishment" for his actions. They warned that anyone using their name for unauthorized work will face similar consequences.
