Guwahati: Security forces seized more than ₹80 crore worth of drugs and several illegal firearms during coordinated raids across Assam and Manipur on Friday. Units from the Assam Rifles, operating under the Army Spear Corps, teamed up with the Central Reserve Police Force and local police to target narcotics routes.
The teams hit Jiribam in Manipur and Sribhumi in Assam. They hauled in 10.891 kilograms of brown sugar and 14,000 Yaba tablets. The Yaba shipment carried a street value of nearly ₹2.5 crore. Police apprehended six people during these drug busts.
A separate operation in Imphal East uncovered six firearms. Further searches in Keishampat and Charangpat led to the arrest of three individuals linked to the United National Liberation Front (Koireng). The Army identified these men as active cadres tied to an extortion ring. A senior official noted that weakened insurgent groups are trying to regroup through these illicit activities. "The official also pointed to the flow of narcotics from across the Myanmar border as a source of funding for such networks."
Authorities claim drugs often move from Myanmar to fund insurgent bases. The current crackdown aligns with the federal Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan initiative to choke off trafficking. Security forces plan to maintain pressure to block the flow of arms and narcotics across the Northeast.
