Imphal: Security forces intercepted a massive shipment of narcotics on Wednesday in Jiribam. A joint operation involving the Assam Rifles, CRPF, and Manipur Police recovered 10.8 kilograms of brown sugar. The haul holds an estimated international market value of Rs 80 crore.
Authorities acting on specific inputs stopped a truck, registration number AS 01 LC 7631, at Makha Basti along J.T. Road at 4:30 pm. The drugs were hidden in the roof of the truck cabin. The search occurred in the presence of Borobekera Sub-Deputy Collector Md Hefajuddin. Police seized Rs 1,500 in cash and a mobile phone during the raid.
The driver, Azahar Hussain alias Monu, 37, of Cachar, Assam, was arrested at 5:30 pm. He told police that a person identified as Md Anash concealed the drugs. Officials believe the load originated in Myanmar.
This seizure was part of a larger, 36-hour crackdown across the state. In separate operations, security personnel apprehended three more suspects. Chandel District Police arrested 37-year-old Hatneichong at Saluk under Chakpikarong Police Station. They recovered six soap cases of brown sugar from her. Imphal East commandos and the 28 Assam Rifles arrested Akoijam Sushil Meitei, 43, and Thoiba Nameirakpam, 31, at Thoubal Phoudel. The team recovered 22.4 kg of cannabis and two mobile phones from them. Total seizures from these operations exceed Rs 10 crore in market value, excluding the Jiribam haul.
The porous 1,643-km border with Myanmar remains a major transit point for heroin and methamphetamines. Officials are currently tracing the trafficking networks. As the defence spokesman stated, the Jiribam operation "reflected close coordination and effective cooperation among the Assam Rifles, CRPF and Manipur Police in their campaign against narcotics trafficking." All four detainees face charges under the NDPS Act and relevant laws.
