Itanagar: A self-styled Lieutenant Colonel from the banned NSCN-R outfit quit the insurgency. Penngam Konyak, 42, surrendered to security forces on July 17 in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. He walked into the Superintendent of Police office in Khonsa to give up. The militant brought a pistol and live cartridges with him. He hails from Nyasa village in the Mon district of Nagaland.

A joint team handled the surrender. Members of the Arunachal Pradesh Police, 44 Assam Rifles, and the 36 Battalion of the CRPF accepted the weapons. Sustained operational pressure and psychological campaigns pushed Konyak to turn himself in. Security agencies have ramped up activity in the Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts to weaken militant groups.

Officials view this move as a major step toward regional stability. The goal is to nudge more insurgents back into civilian life. A senior police officer noted the impact of the ongoing efforts. "This surrender reinforces the collective commitment of the administration and security agencies towards wiping out insurgency, restoring societal harmony, and creating an environment conducive to economic development in the region," the officer said. Security forces intend to keep the heat on to prevent further disruption of peace in eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
