Kuki Groups Bar Meitei Entry, Warn CM Against Churachandpur Visit Over 'Untoward Incidents'

Imphal: A conglomerate of Kuki civil society organisations in Manipur's Churachandpur district has issued a joint press statement announcing a boycott of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh's proposed visit to the district on July 4, and declared that no Meitei individual, official, or group will be allowed entry until a solution to the ongoing Kuki-Zo-Meitei conflict is reached.

In the joint statement dated June 3, 2026, the Kuki Civil Society Organisations (KCSOs), Churachandpur, stated that "reliable sources" had indicated the Chief Minister was scheduled to visit Lamka/Songpi on July 4. The organisations made it clear that "until and unless there is a solution to the ongoing Kuki-Zo-Meitei Conflict, we would not allow any Meitei individual, officials or group in our District, be it the Chief Minister."

The statement further warned that "any untoward incident arising out of his visit will solely be his responsibility."

The press statement was jointly signed by Letpu Haokip, President of Kuki Inpi Churachandpur; Lenminlal Gangte, President of KSO Churachandpur; Ngaineikim, President of KWOHR General Headquarters; Hatkholam, President of Kuki Women Union; D Paozangam, Vice President of KKL General Headquarters; and Letkam Haokip, Chairman of KCA Churachandpur.

Context and Background

If the visit materialises, it would mark the first time a Manipur Chief Minister has travelled to the hill district since ethnic violence erupted between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities in May 2023. The proposed visit also coincides with the last rites of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who died on February 21 this year from injuries sustained during the 2023 violence. The Zomi Council has organised a condolence programme on July 4, with the burial scheduled for around 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to review the security situation in Manipur on July 4 in New Delhi, meeting with senior security officials, including the State's Security Adviser, DGP, and paramilitary force heads. The Chief Minister is not expected to attend that meeting.
