Imphal: A 14-member delegation from Churachandpur arrived in Imphal on July 31. They met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Babupara. MLA Tongbram Robindro joined the Chief Minister to welcome the group. This was no ordinary visit. It marked the first time representatives from the Unified Zou Organisation, the Zomi Chief Association, and the Zomi Council traveled together to the capital since ethnic violence crippled the state in May 2023.
The government views the visit as proof that law and order is improving. Movement is starting to flow again. The delegation pushed for peace. They presented a formal proposal to build a Multi-Utility Hall in Churachandpur. They also promised to back government efforts to restore normalcy and fix trust between fractured communities.
Vumsuan Naulak, Chairman of the Zomi Council, signaled optimism after the talks. "The meeting was cordial and constructive. We are grateful to the state government for reaching out and creating opportunities for people to work together for development and lasting peace," he said.
The delegation included P. Guite, Vice President of the Zomi Chief Association, and Liankhankhup Zou of the Unified Zou Organisation. Social worker Joseph Valte, son of the late MLA Vungzagin Valte, also joined the group. Mary Jones, the Council’s information secretary, noted that the trip was her first to Imphal in nearly three years. She called it a positive change.
Chief Minister Singh stood his ground. He promised the delegation that his office is committed to harmony. He plans to keep talking to all stakeholders. He wants a lasting resolution to the crisis. For now, the focus remains on keeping the peace and getting life back to normal.
