Imphal: Flash floods slammed Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Thursday afternoon after heavy rain triggered severe waterlogging. The downpour started around 4 p.m. and lasted over an hour, forcing local streams to overflow and paralyzing daily life. Major roads and residential compounds went under.
The flooding claimed a victim. Thangjohnson, a resident of New Lamka Vengnuam South, vanished after being swept away by the Lanva River on Thursday evening. He was trying to grab construction materials lost during embankment work when the current dragged him under. Search operations along the Tuitha River are ongoing, though the man is feared drowned.
The deluge hit multiple neighborhoods. Worst-affected areas included Lower Mission Veng, Zeliang, D. Phailian, Compound Veng, Lailam Veng, and New Lamka. Residents also reported knee-deep water in Tuibong. Houses, food stocks, and vehicles suffered damage as families fled rising water.
Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar, IAS, toured the disaster zone on July 31. He visited Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang, and Beulalane. Accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Seiminthang Lenthang and other officials, he handed out relief supplies to displaced families. The DC stated, "A detailed assessment of the damage was underway to facilitate further relief and rehabilitation measures in the affected areas."
Locals blame poor drainage for the disaster. They claim even light rain now overwhelms the town. Authorities are currently finishing damage assessments while continuing to support search teams working in the mud and debris.
