Manipur Officials Plant Trees to Save Lanva River

Imphal: Manipur authorities planted 100 saplings along the Lanva River at Angels Place in Churachandpur. This drive aimed to fix the river ecosystem and boost the district green cover. The Churachandpur District Administration ran the event under the themes Green Today, Brighter Tomorrow and Plant Trees, Clean Air, Better Tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar led the effort. He told the crowd that rivers sustain local life, irrigation, and cultural traditions. Kumar urged youth groups, village chiefs, and civil society to defend the water source. He noted that encroachers threaten the river. He said, "Rivers are vital to local communities, supporting livelihoods, irrigation, drinking water and cultural practices."

Sub-Divisional Officers from Churachandpur, Tuibong, and Singngat will coordinate protection efforts alongside the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mualnuam. Kumar wants to restore wetlands and ponds to help the ecosystem. He also asked media outlets to spread awareness. Officials plan to hold consultation meetings with stakeholders to keep the project moving.

Divisional Forest Officer Abhijit KV and ADC CEO Shokhongam Baite joined the event. The Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, forest staff, and local volunteers also helped plant the trees.
